ASK AGATE: Is it gauche to wear too much jewelry?

Dear Agate,

I like to wear jewelry like a kitsch Christmas tree—sparkling, a lot of it, and kind of all over. Am I in bad taste? Am I man-repellant?

From, Over-the-Top and Oblivious

Dear Over-the-Top and Oblivious,

Case study: Elton John’s Rolex Daytona watch, covered in leopard print, cognac sapphires and diamonds, recently sold at Christie’s auction and hitting record price. You hate as much as you love.

Look, minimalism is purifying and intellectual but, dearest, go baroque if that vibrational is your spiritual situational. The word “jewel” derives from the Latin word for “play thing”, so have fun and make it Christmas-Generous every day. Go Gucci. Go Buccellati and Graff altogether. Get sparkling. I will be cheering right behind you.

As for man repelling, well, it is true you will attract the attention of wide-eyed young children rather than the marrying intentions of sober financial investment types but no man who truly loves women denies them their fancy. To clearly answer your question: don’t worry about it. Gauche is great style expression.

Yours truly,
